Dedication Sunday, Danika turns 16 months and gets pneumonia and a hard bump on the head!
On Sunday, February 22nd Danika turned 16 months old and Grandpa Herman performed her dedication service at our church. It was a special day filled with family and friends. Grandma and Grandpa B and Uncle Dean also made the road trip to be with us for this very special occasion and we had many other family and friends present to help us celebrate both at church and at the lunch after.
Unfortunately, later that evening Danika came down with a 102 degree fever and little did we know we were headed for a very long week with a very sick little girl. Monday afternoon she was diagnosed with pneumonia and later had a 104.5 degree fever. Tuesday night she was rushed to urgent care to be nebulized when her breathing became very rapid and shallow and it was obvious she was struggling to breathe as her breaths were at 60 per minute.
By Wednesday afternoon Grandma and Grandpa B arrived from Iowa to help care for Danika so Dan and I returned to our jobs. I still don’t know how they get her to nap for 2 and a half hours and she only naps an hour for us! They gave her expert care while we worked during the day.
Grandma and Grandpa B let us sleep in on Saturday morning and then they headed back to Iowa (we hope they’ve recuperated from following a very active 16 month old for 4 days!) We discovered earlier in the week that three of the other infants at daycare had pneumonia and a 4th had RSV - so 5 out of 6 infants very ill including Danika – this does nothing to make us feel better about having Danika in daycare!
Danika seems to be learning and saying and doing new things every day. She can now say “down” when walking down the steps, she says “dog”, “bottle”, “Jesus”, “duck”, “brown bear” in addition to the words she’s already learned. Grandma and Grandpa H got her a CD of personalized songs for Christmas and one songs has a line “shout God loves me” and she can repeat ‘God loves me!” – so cute to hear! She has quite the fan base at our church too, with many older couples who love her waves and high-fives during church.
Last Saturday Danika got a nasty bump on her head when we were trying to get her ready for bed. Both Mommy and Daddy were there and she just tripped and fell head first into the corner of the entertainment center. We knew it was a hard knock. Sure enough she had a huge welt and a cut on her forehead. She's mending well but it sure was scary for mom and dad! Just the first of many hurts we wish we could spare her.
For our 6 months as a family celebration we went to Red Robin for burgers and fries and Danika got to try onion rings and a corn dog for the first time. (She’s in training for the State Fair). Danika enjoyed her celebration!
Every day we are thankful for our precious little gift from God!

Congratulations! She is adorable! What a special time for a dedication and how awesome her Grandpa could play such an important part. I'm so sorry to read about how sick she was. Sounds like you handled everything like pros! Burger and fries is a far cry from the congee of 6 mos. ago huh? :)
